PIC is an acronym for Peripheral Interface Controller. PICs initially had only read-only memory (ROM) or field programmable EPROM, of which some had the provision for erasing memory. The current models of PIC come with Flash Memory for program storage and some of which allow the possibility for reprogramming itself. PICs are quite popular among industrial users and also with hobby based users since these controllers are of low cost, widely available and having wider applications with reprogrammable flash memory capability.
